In order for filter media to properly function, it is essential that it is regularly maintained. When filter media  accumulates deposits, many issues begin to surface that usually result in long-term damage.

 Problems:

  • Increased backpressure.
  • Shorter filter runs.
  • Breakthrough of contaminants.
  • Mixing of media layers & supporting material.
  • Formation of mudballs.
  • Increased turbidity.
  • Channel formation.
  • Calcification or material binding.
  • Underdrain issues.
  • Higher chlorine demand.
  • Short circuiting.

The initial step is determining the current condition of the existing filter material. A critical component for the evaluation process is the sieve analysis, which determines whether or not the existing filter media meets its original specifications and design criteria.

If the filter media does not meet specifications, the media should be exchanged. If the filter material does meet specifications, then in-situ rehabilitation is a viable option. This rehabilitation process is an off-line, on site application that will not disturb the media, and in most cases will eliminate extended down times. This process has been performed on both gravity and pressure type filters in water and wastewater treatment plants.

Typical results after the completion of the ALL SERVICE cleaning process is as follows.

  • Removal of mineral & inorganic deposits.
  • Eliminate channeling, mudballs, & cementing.
  • Increase filter run times.
  • Reduce starting head pressure.
  • Increased filter productivity & capacity.
  • Resolve effluent turbidity issues.
  • Improve effectiveness of backwash flows.
  • Re-stratification of media layers.
  • Deposit removal from the underdrain system.
  • Eliminate short circuiting.
